Export program for small Canadian companies now helps 500 of them reach new markets

Federal government officials announced this week that 500 Canadian small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) have been approved for CanExport funding since the program started this year.

Launched in January, CanExport provides financial support to help Canadian SMEs develop new international markets.

To date, more than $15.2 million has been committed to support Canadian SMEs. Successful applicants have been supported in a broad range of endeavours in all regions of the globe, from innovative technology for monitoring water quality in India to Canadian jewellery accessing the Chinese market to customized information technology solutions and products for service providers in Finland.

Canadian SMEs planning or considering upcoming international business development activities in new markets can apply for CanExport funding.

Costs admissible to CanExport include travel, participation at trade fairs, market research, adaptation of marketing tools for new markets and legal fees associated with distribution and representation agreements.

Eligible companies must employ fewer than 250 employees and have annual revenue in Canada of between $200,000 and $50 million. Eligible activities must promote export development and go beyond an applicant's core activities, as well as represent new or expanded initiatives.
