Canadian and U.S. officials hold talks on expansion of preclearance operations

March 17, 2017

Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Ralph Goodale, met with the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, John Kelly, during Mr. Kelly' first trip to Canada as Secretary.

Following-up on commitments from March of last year they discussed the next steps to expand preclearance to new locations in air, rail, land, and marine modes.

While there is still work to be done in terms of legislation on the Canadian side with the passage of Bill C-23, the Minister and the Secretary tasked their officials to report back on these issues, as well as negotiate a path forward to pursue cargo preclearance or pre-inspection, including identifying potential pilot sites.

Canada will also continue to consider potential operations in the United States.
