The European Union is the largest exporter of motor vehicles

In 2016, the European Union (EU) was the largest exporter of motor vehicles in the world, with total exports (to countries outside the EU) amounting to US$214 billion. Japan was the second largest exporter (US$141 billion), followed by the United States (US$121 billion).

In the other trade direction, the United States was the largest importer of motor vehicles in the world (US$282 billion), far ahead of the EU (US$85 billion) and China (US$71 billion).

The interesting statistics were published this week by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

The US was the largest market for EU motor vehicle exports (25% of all EU motor vehicle exports). China was the second export market for EU motor vehicles (16%), followed by Turkey (7%), Switzerland and Japan (both 5%).

Motor vehicles imported by the EU in 2016, came mostly from Turkey (20% of all EU imports of motor vehicles), Japan (19%), the United States (14%), South Korea (10%) and China (8%).
